Ad-Safe Test Mode
Updated August 2026 · 5 min read
Run test conversions through a live server-side container without reviewed advertising destinations receiving them, while analytics and unrecognised destinations keep delivering normally.
What Ad-Safe Test Mode does
Testing a conversion normally means creating one. A test purchase reaches your advertising platforms as a genuine conversion: it enters reporting, it feeds bid optimisation, and it cannot be withdrawn.
Ad-Safe Test Mode changes that for the duration of a session. The panel states the behaviour exactly:
On positively identified Preview requests only, reviewed advertising deliveries are not sent. Google Analytics, unknown and custom destinations stay live. This works without Outgoing request logging and stores no request evidence in that mode.
It is part of sGTM Test Lab and holds its own one-hour lease.
When to use it
- Validating a purchase or lead conversion end-to-end before a launch.
- Reproducing a customer's checkout without contaminating campaign reporting.
- Checking a new advertising tag fires with the right payload, before it starts counting.
What traffic qualifies
Only requests positively identified as belonging to your Preview session. Identification comes from the Google Tag Manager Preview credential bound to the session.
Ordinary visitor traffic is never affected. Your live conversions continue to be delivered throughout.
Reuse an active Live Debug credential
If Live Debug is already running, the credential is shared:
The active sGTM Live Debug credential will be reused securely. You do not need to paste it again.
Use Ad-Safe independently
Without Live Debug running, supply the credential yourself in the Preview header token field —
paste the X-Gtm-Server-Preview value from your server container's Preview session.
Used only to bind genuine Preview traffic to this session. Only its one-way fingerprint is retained; the plaintext token is never stored.
Choose destinations to pause
The selection fieldset is labelled Choose destinations to pause, offering Google Ads, Meta and TikTok.
Your choice is locked for this one-hour session. Google Analytics and unverified destinations always stay live.
The selection cannot be changed mid-session. Decide what you are pausing before you start. To change it, end the session and start a new one.
Start the session
Press Enable Ad-Safe Mode. As with Live Debug, activation completes only once the serving runtime has applied the change — wait for the panel to confirm before running your test.
Understand what is paused
Only selected, reviewed advertising destinations, and only on positively-identified Preview requests.
Understand what continues sending normally
Everything else, specifically:
- Google Analytics always stays live.
- Unknown and custom destinations always stay live.
- Ordinary, non-Preview traffic is delivered normally to every destination, including the ones you selected.
Analytics staying live is intentional and useful — your test still appears in analytics, so you can confirm the event was correct while the advertising side of it is held back.
Test Google Ads behaviour
Google Ads is the destination whose behaviour has been observed end-to-end on a live container. In that verification, selected Google Ads deliveries were recorded as would have been sent rather than being delivered, while Google Analytics events on the same Preview traffic continued to be delivered, and ordinary traffic was unaffected.
Test Meta and TikTok behaviour
Meta and TikTok can both be selected, and are handled by the same mechanism as Google Ads.
Their live behaviour has not yet been observed end-to-end. In the verification run these two platforms were selected but no Meta or TikTok tag actually fired, so there is no recorded evidence of their delivery being held back in practice. Treat them as expected-but-unconfirmed: verify against your own platform's reporting before relying on it for a critical test.
This is a deliberate statement of what has and has not been proven, rather than an implied guarantee.
Fail-open and no-evidence behaviour
Ad-Safe Test Mode fails open. A request that cannot be positively identified as Preview traffic is treated as ordinary traffic and delivered normally.
The consequence, stated plainly: a test conversion may occasionally be delivered for real. The alternative — failing towards blocking — would risk dropping genuine customer conversions, which is the more damaging error. Do not treat this Power-Up as an absolute guarantee that nothing will reach an ad platform.
When running without Outgoing request logging, no request evidence is stored for the session.
Disable Ad-Safe Test Mode
Press Disable Ad-Safe Mode to release this lease. Live Debug, if running, keeps going — the leases are independent.
End the entire Test Lab session
End Test Session stops both tools and clears the session state and credential:
Stop sGTM Live Debug and Ad-Safe Mode together.
One-hour expiry
The lease lasts exactly one hour. If it elapses while Ad-Safe Test Mode is still on, the status becomes needs attention rather than switching off by itself, and a new session cannot start until the expired one is ended.
An expired session is not a paused session. Once the hour is up, do not assume conversions are still being held back — end the session and start a fresh one.
Limitations
- One hour per session, no extension.
- Destination selection is locked once the session starts.
- Owners and administrators only.
- Fails open, so suppression is not absolute.
- Meta and TikTok suppression is not yet confirmed by live observation.
Troubleshooting
My test conversion still reached the ad platform. Check that the destination was selected before the session started, that the session was runtime-confirmed when you ran the test, and that the request actually carried your Preview credential. Fail-open means an unidentified request is delivered normally.
I cannot change which platforms are paused. The choice is locked for the session by design. End the session and start a new one.
Analytics recorded my test. Expected. Google Analytics always stays live.
The status says needs attention. The hour elapsed. Press End Test Session, then start again.
FAQ
Does this stop all conversions?
No. It applies only to the destinations you selected, only on positively-identified Preview requests, and it fails open — so an unidentified request is delivered normally.
Will my test show up in Google Analytics?
Yes. Analytics always stays live, which lets you confirm the event was correct while its advertising delivery is held back.
Can I pause Google Analytics too?
No. Analytics and unrecognised destinations always stay live.
Is Meta and TikTok suppression proven?
Not yet by live observation. Both can be selected and use the same mechanism as Google Ads, but no Meta or TikTok delivery has been observed being held back end-to-end. Verify in the platform's own reporting before depending on it.
Do I need request logging enabled?
No. It works without Outgoing request logging, and stores no request evidence in that mode.
What happens to real customer conversions during a session?
They are delivered normally. Only positively-identified Preview traffic is affected.
